Our story

A Legacy of Ice Cream. A New Chapter of Joy.

Some stories are best told one scoop at a time. Ours began in 1948.

Every journey has a beginning

Rooted in an ice-cream-making legacy that began in 1948, Big Daddy Creamery & Cafe brings a long-standing love for ice cream into a new space at OMBR Layout, Banaswadi, Bengaluru.

Our first store is a place where familiar flavours meet new discoveries, where families can spend time together, friends can catch up, and everyday moments can become little memories.

For us, it is about more than what’s in the scoop. It is about creating a welcoming space, sharing the joy of good food and making room for moments worth remembering.

OMBR Layout is the beginning of a new chapter for Big Daddy. We look forward to being part of your stories, one scoop at a time.

The journey

One scoop at a time, since 1948

1948

The Beginning

JOY’s Founder, Late Shri L.C. Java, a B.Sc. Honors in Geology and an assistant mines manager at Killick Nixon, went to London for training at the Cornwall School of Mines. A series of mine accidents led him to opt out of the mining industry. He enrolled himself at Blackpool School of Food Technology, where his course included a stint at the UK Ice Cream Alliances. After learning more about ice creams and their manufacturing process, he came back to India to start JOY Ice Creams. Mr. Java leased the basement at Rhythm House in Kala Ghoda for ₹12 a month, and the first ice cream company in India was born.

The Worli Factory

As JOY grew over time, it eventually relocated to Worli, to No. 82 Annie Besant Road. This was the location of JOY’s manufacturing and one of its original parlors. For the product’s taste and quality alone, everyone adored JOY. The taste of JOY, the first homogenized ice cream, was self-explanatory.

1966-1967

Arrival in Bangalore

It was in this year that JOY decided to spread its wings and to move to Bangalore as well. It then set up and opened JOY Ice Creams (Bangalore), which was incorporated in 1966, and in 1967, they were in business in Bangalore.

Major Expansion & Standards Leadership

JOY’s most transformative years was marked by its move from a small basement unit in Worli to a larger factory in Kandivali, reflecting its rapid growth and ambition. During this period, JOY’s founder, Late Shri L.C. Java, along with leading figures from the dairy industry, became founding board members in the establishment of the ISI standards for dairy products. By 1971, JOY had expanded its franchise network across India, reaching a peak of 36 factories, and in 1979, Big Daddy was officially registered.

The Innovation Decade

The 1980’s marked a major phase of innovation and expansion for JOY, with the launch of new products and category-defining brands such as Snoosh, Big Daddy, Nutty Delight, Duet, and others that quickly gained strong market recognition. During this period, JOY also played a key role in shaping India’s first ISI standards for kulfi, with its founder contributing significantly to the development of regulations and quality benchmarks for the ice cream industry.

1981

The Joy Cup — Celebrating Sport & Community

In 1981, JOY extended its spirit beyond ice creams by hosting the Joy Cup, a cricket tournament held at Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai. The event brought together sport, celebration, and community, reflecting JOY’s deep connection with popular culture and its audiences.

1983

India’s First Low-Fat Ice Cream

Marking a pioneering moment in India’s ice cream industry, JOY introduced “Slimmer,” India’s first low-fat ice cream, redefining indulgence with a healthier twist. At a time when the market was dominated by traditional, high-fat desserts, JOY identified the emerging need for lighter, guilt-free options and created a completely new category in frozen desserts.

Founder Honored

Late Shri L.C. Java was a pioneering Indian entrepreneur and the visionary founder of Joy Ice Creams, widely regarded as India’s first major ice cream company. A B.Sc. (Honours) graduate in Geology, he began his career as an Assistant Mines Manager at Killick Nixon and later trained at the Cornwall School of Mines, London, gaining valuable international exposure.

His unique blend of technical expertise, global learning, and entrepreneurial foresight led him to establish Joy Ice Creams, creating a lasting legacy in India’s ice cream industry. In recognition of his contribution, Shri L.C. Java was honoured as the “Father of the Indian Ice Cream Industry” by the Karnataka Pradesh Hoteliers Association, with the award conferred by Mr. J.H. Patel, then Karnataka Minister for Large and Medium Industries and Power.

This expansion marked a significant milestone in JOY’s journey, reinforcing its position as a trusted and emerging national ice cream brand.
